SLOTD Catchup 26th July 2007

Much silliness has been missed, as I have to e-mail myself these links back home, and up until recently I haven’t been able to retrieve my e-mails…

So here’s the combined SLOTD:

Silliness:

Summing up the cross over between YouTube and political debate.

Free MIT courses! Woo!

Dash fiendish game.

Alarming, what the American far-right think when they’re alone.

Most alarming headline of the day: "Paris Hilton’s Excess Jail Sweat to Be Auctioned on Ebay" I’m not even going to include the link to that one.

Here’s how to make a pickled gherkin glow. (That’s just a pickle to the yanks, I’m pretty sure they’re gherkins, feel free to collect me.)

Cool new research into how HIV avoids the immune system, should help with a Vaccine apparently.

Insight into what people would like to believe everyone else is saying.

A brilliant explanation of a bizarre disorder which prevents people recognising faces (actually it’s more bizarre we can do this, not that some people can’t.)

What have we learned from history? Apparently nothing.

Astonishing, if your container is too smooth, you can end up with superheated water.

Despite this being an example of how un-useful voice recognition is, I’m impressed by how well it works. Just don’t use it to write perl scripts.)

I found this funny, I’m looking forward to not having a burning desire to buy new toys all the time.

I’ve heard these sorts of stories before, but I love the idea of a wife who’s happy to pack her husband off on a helium-balloon powered lawn chair.

This is what happens when you can’t agree with your co-author what to write.

Ellie’s Link:

British soldiers using killer badgers?

SLOTD 9th July 2007

Silliness:

Research shows that fast forwarded adverts are just as effective as properly watched adverts. Perhaps this is because adverts hardly work at all?

As the website says: "Free, unlimited access to two thousand years of mankind and medicine in pictures" Thank you Wellcome trust.

SLOTD 5th July 2007

Silliness:

Teddy bears
turned inside out to fundamentally change the way people react to them, they’re pretty cool objects – if slightly distressing.

SLOTD 6th July 2007

Geekiness:

Here’s a programming tip you may not want to forget.

The funniest thing I’ve watched in a long time.

SLOTD 3rd July 2007

Silliness:

Watch and learn.

From those talks, is this the most exciting new idea in desktop design? I’m not so sure, but it does look interesting.

On an entirely different note, Sci-Fi writers (specifically TV) have no sense of scale.

SLOTD 2nd July 2007

Silliness:

These are really cool, if only it could be done without the juddering effect.

This is a few days old, but it’s still intriguing, the cat-cam so the owner can see what the cat gets up to.

Geekiness:

This is a cool game, no brakes.

SLOTD 28th June 2007

Silliness:

Finally, someone refuses to report a story about Paris Hilton, because she’s just not that interesting.

James Randi is a professional sceptic, here’s a video of him casting aspersions over homeopathy.
